Kaeo 331kV/11kV Substation | Kerikeri, Northland
Northland energy resilience thanks to new substation
Project Background
The construction of the $3M Kaeo 33kV/11kV substation civil and electrical works was awarded to UGL as part of Top Energy’s long-term network upgrade resilience programme. Due to several challenges the project was running behind programme and Anglo Tasman were engaged in January 2018 to provide Project Management and electrical installation/commissioning support to the UGL delivery team.
Scope of Work
Initially engaged to provide Project Management support, it quickly became evident that additional electrical and commissioning resources were also required to get the delivery of the contract back on track and meet Top Energy’s deadline of 31 March 2018 for completion of the project.
Ultimately Anglo Tasman planned, supervised and assisted with the following elements of the contract.
Substation building electrical works
Transformer installation
33kV cable installation
Protection panels and cabling
Establishment of Permit and Isolation procedures for commissioning
Commissioning through to power on
Programme of work
The contract was running over 1 month behind programme when Anglo Tasman were engaged in January 2018. Using a combination of rigorous planning, provision of additional resources from Auckland (enabling some activities to be completed in parallel) and regular updating of the installation and commissioning programme we were able to recover the delay in the project to achieve a power on date of 28 March 2018 in line with Top Energy’s requirements.
Challenges
The remote location of the project and a lack of local skills presented a challenge – Anglo Tasman provided additional resource from our Auckland team to aid recovery of the programme slippage.
