Microgrid diesel generation substation | Auckland

New Zealand first substation for Waipa Networks

Project Background

Anglo Tasman was asked by GRS energy to design, build and install New Zealand’s first microgrid diesel generator substation for Waipa Networks. Getting the project design right is critical to project success.

We developed an innovative solution, housing the switchroom in containerised solution with modern technology that helps to reduce Waipa Networks’ carbon footprint.

  • Development, design and concept of generator substation for peak lopping and maximum demand on the local power network company.

  • Containerised Switchroom design and supply

  • Cable design

  • Electrical installation

  • Civil Installation Management

  • Development of project commissioning plan

  • Development and management of permits isolation procedure

  • Commissioning of the plant

  • Production of O&M manuals

Programme of work

The project required the development of a design and installation plan, along with a project commissioning plan.

In addition to the generator substation design process, Anglo Tasman managed the installation process to ensure that the design specifications were followed accurately.

The substation has been designed to manage peak loads on Waipa’s network so adherence to our detailed design is critical to ensuring accurate load management and reduced service outages for Waipa Networks’ customers.

Challenges

The main challenge was the unique nature of the project. Being the first of its kind in New Zealand, the project presented more than its fair share of challenges along the way, but our thorough approach and inclusion of best in class experts in the process has ensured a successful outcome to date. While progress is ongoing, the results to date have been well received.
