Project Management - What is it?
Project Management is a service for delivering projects on time and within the budget.
It is vital for any high-level project for example building a power plant or extending a substation, where there are many hazards, trying to meet the deadlines, and ensuring it is completed to a high standard.
A good project manager should be able to communicate with the team at all levels as well as updating the client on progress. They follow a project from its design to the final handover, ensuring a smooth transition through each stage of the plans.
The objective of project management is to produce a complete project which complies with the client’s objectives. In many cases the objective of project management is also to shape or reform the client’s brief to feasibly address the client’s objectives. Once the client’s objectives are clearly established they should influence all decisions made by other people involved in the project – for example project managers, designers, contractors and sub-contractors. Ill-defined or too tightly prescribed project management objectives are detrimental to decision making.
Another example of where a project manager is needed is on power plants. They can be situated in the most demanding of environments, therefore understanding the logistics, and planning for any risks and uncertainties is paramount. Health and Safety should always be at the forefront and monitored regularly which is implemented between the Project Manager and the Health and Safety officer.
In short, a Project Manager should have the following attributes, such as Leadership, strong communication skills, technical expertise, good decision making, and cool under pressure.
