The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) is an American professional association seeking to advance heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC&R) systems design and construction. ASHRAE was founded in 1894 at a meeting of engineers in New York City. It has members in 132 countries globally composed of engineers, architects, building owners, mechanical contractors and others concerned with construction and designs. They were the first organisation to discover oil fouling and its effect on HVAC-R systems. ASHRAE comprises 57,000 representatives which endeavour to improve and develop technical standards, programs and projects that focus on energy efficiency and sustainable development with HVAC-R systems
